The Identifiability and Discriminability between Incompletely Neutralized Sounds: Evidence from Russian
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the identifiability and discriminability of speech sounds in a neutralized position. As in other languages, it is reported that Russian word-final devoicing in Russian is shown to be incomplete in production. In order to examine the perceptual status between incompletely neutralized sounds, both identification and discrimination performance were analyzed and compared. The results revealed that listeners were not only sensitive to slight acoustic differences between the two sounds, but also able to identify them, indicating that voicing neutralization in Russian is incomplete in perception as well. Moreover, the comparison between identifiability and discriminability showed the predominance of the latter over the former.

Impact of Source Identifiability on Perceived Loudness
In order to disentangle acoustical and non-acoustical factors in sound-quality evaluation, a signal-processing scheme [H. Fastl (2001). Proceedings 17th ICA, Rome] that renders most sounds unrecognizable while preserving their temporal loudness envelopes was employed. Two independent groups of subjects (N=20 each) evaluated a set of 40 environmental and product sounds, either in their original,...
متن کاملAn Estimation of The Impact of Economic Sanctions and Oil Price Shocks on Iran-Russian Trade: Evidence from a Gravity- VEC Approach
Abstract This article is an empirical attempt to explore the relationship between sanctions (financial and non-financial), oil price shocks and Iran-Russian bilateral trade flows over the period 1991–2014. In contrast to earlier studies in which a gravity model has been estimated through a panel data approach, in this paper the authors apply a gravity model for only two countries and do the es...
متن کاملParalympic Judo: Is there Evidence for Match Rigging among Athletes with Disabilities?
Objectives. This paper studies the existence or non-existence of match-fixing (or rigging) among judo wrestlers (judoka) with disabilities during the consecutive Paralympic Games from 1988 until 2016. Methods. In our analysis, we use the institutional framework that makes it easy understand and model the incentives of the wrestlers using the readily available data. Our data set consists of off...
متن کاملInfluence of categories on perception 1 Running head: INFLUENCE OF CATEGORIES ON PERCEPTION The influence of categories on perception: Explaining the perceptual magnet effect as optimal statistical inference
A variety of studies have demonstrated that organizing stimuli into categories can affect the way the stimuli are perceived. One such effect is the perceptual magnet effect, in which discriminability between vowels is reduced near prototypical vowel sounds. We present a Bayesian model to explain why this reduced discriminability might occur: it arises as a consequence of optimally solving the s...
متن کاملThe Sanctions and Geographical Shift in Trading Partners: Evidence from Iran and Russia through a Gravity Model
T his paper is an attempt investigating the relationship between sanctions implications and geographical shift in trading partners. To this end, we analyze separately foreign trade patterns of two countries namely Iran and Russia - which are under imposed sanctions experience - with two United Nations Regional Groups (The Asia-Pacific and the Western European groups) using a gravity...
